An Introduction to PageRank

By Calvin Cary at 2011-01-03 05:35:10
Page Rank (PR) is an algorithm used by Google to compute the relative importance of a particular webpage on the internet and assign it a numeric value from 0 (least important) to 10 (most important). This value is calculated through an iterative analysis of the backlinks to the webpage. The concept is simple; page rank allows the most important websites to appear at the top of search results. Although you may have seen complicated theories of how page rank works, illustrated by stupendously complicated mathematical formulas, you do not need to be a genius to understand the basic principles.

Page rank (PR) is totally different from Google ranking, although PR is a number which is assigned by Google. Page rank as nothing to do with search terms. Page rank is a number between 0 and 10, which is an indication of how important Google thinks your website is to the world.  Page Rank is Google's patented method of measuring link popularity for a given URL. By link popularity most people mean the number of times a URL is cited or linked to by other URLs on the web. But in Google's case, link popularity measures not only the quantity of inbound links but also the quality of inbound links.

Pages that Google recognizes as being out there with no Optimization or Search Engine Work at all done on them would be classified as a PR0. This could be a one page site with duplicate content or a site with almost no backlinks. The basic definition of page rank assumes that zero is low, and 10 is the highest possible rank. 5 is a decent page rank for any site. 7 and 8 are extremely popular sites. Google is one of the few at 10. A main difference between Page Rank and SERP is the frequency of update. As stated by the Google Engineer, Matt Cutts, Google updates Page Rank approximately once every three months. The updated Page Rank is shown on the Google tool bar.

The reason for this is that Google decided that the more web pages linking to yours, then the more relevant your page must be to the search term (keyword) concerned. Your page must be important for other pages to be linked to it. If you are one of those that believe that the more links you can get to your website the better, then you are wrong. When Google started the Page Rank frenzy by putting that little green bar on their toolbar, they didn't realize the consequences of what they were doing. Its name comes from its developer Larry Page, with whom later Sergey Brin joined in research for a new search engine. Their project started in 1995 and in 1998 the two developers of Page Rank founded Google Inc. Page Rank is nowadays a trademark of Google and provides the basis for Google’s web search.

There are a couple different ways to determine the page rank of a specific web page. To do this, you must either use a web browser that displays the page rank data, or go to a site where, by entering the url of a page you are concerned with, and get its page rank. Page Rank is based on links between your site and other sites, in fact specifically between web pages, since it is links between individual pages rather than complete websites that interests Google. That is because Google lists individual pages and not domains. Page Rank is a value that measures how powerful your page is on the worldwide web. When your page links to another page, it is effectively giving out some of its powers to the other page.
